Monday Musings: Breasts, Networking and Motherhood

I have never stared at so many breasts in my life.  Big ones, little ones, flat, nursing ones… there were all kinds.  This isn’t my usual Friday night.  Normally I am home in my jammies after a hectic week of work and kids. Even when I am out, breast-staring is just not my thing. I really don’t care what other women’s boobies look like.

No, I’m not creepy.  I was networking. It was a book launch hosted at a swanky spot in Toronto. Wine, catering, and a room full of women whom I know. Well sort of.

We were all wearing nametags with our twitter handles and our given names on them.  The nametags were stuck on our boobs. I am not used to being called @practicalmum in person. It was very cool to meet women that I chat, follow and laugh with on Twitter. We spoke in more than 140 characters! I was intrigued to meet the people behind their Twitter handles.

That night, someone said to me that I was organized.  I grabbed her shoulder, looked her in the eye and said “Sister, You’ve made my day. You should see what’s really going on at my house while I’m working on practicalmum.com. If only you could see the chaos! Laundry, clutter, crayon writing on wall, grape juice stain on the carpet. If only you could watch me type while one of my two kids climbs all over me and presses each button on the computer. A normal office this is not!”

Of course, the coolest thing was comparing notes with other mummy entrepreneurs, One of the things I’ve learned is that “If content is King, then marketing is Queen and she runs the household”.  Networking and getting myself out there is hard, but so good.  Hiding behind my computer and twitter handle is not going to grow this expanding beast called practicalmum.com!

On Sunday, Mother’s Day, I was reminded of how truly amazing it is to be somebody’s Mummy.  We’re all in this together. Thank YOU for sharing the good and bad, the hilarious and the heart wrenching with me and the other mums in our community. Thank you for helping to build practicalmum.com into more than I could ever have imagined.  It’s fun to be a part of something big with you.
